Bikram yoga

for those of you like me who, like me are developing osteoarthiritis you may be wondering what you can do to reverse the wear and tear that many years of rugby have produced.

on the reccommendation of Mr A. Brazier I attended my first Bikram hot yoga session on wednesday. This is an hour and a half of extreme yoga in 40 degrees of heat.

I assumed it was going to be a piece of piss and scoffed at the bizarre minority of men (most class attenders are ladies) waiting for the class to start in nothing but a pair of speedos. however after 70 mins I was genuinely concerned that I would leave the studio in an ambulance. In hindsight I think that going in dehydrated wearing a thick polo shirt were two erroneous decisions compounded by a go hard or go home attitude. I lost my shirt in minutes and with 20 mins to go felt so close to heat/dehydration induced collapse that I had to lie on my mat and look at the ceiling for the remainder of the session. I would have loved to have left the class at this point and hit the showers but leaving is highly frowned upon (all the heat will leave the room).

It was truly horrendous but two days on I feel pretty good and am going back for more. I hope this time that strong hydration will mean I can concentrate less on staying conscious and more on getting an eyeful of the lycra clad ladies that presumablyu surrounded me when my head was spinning on wednesday.

come and have a go if you think you are man enough

UH 3s Match Report

3s match report:

After an interesting season, which has seen old friends, hockey and football players put on the blue and gold jersey of GHRFC, the stage was set for a great last match of the mighty 3s.

Once again a scratch side was selected with Young Simon and myself forced to manage from the sidelines as Jack ‘sideburns’ Limbrick leading the boys onto the field to meet the biggest St.Marys’ 3s side seen in my 4 years with the club. After a late minute absence of our resident hooker, Sal, Tony Sebastien, Mike Warren and Zack ‘such a strong face’ Taylor stepped up to contest in the front row.

The heart of GHRFC was seen from kick off with Izzy and Charlie Reeve putting in crunching tackles in the centres…the latter sending one of Marys’ ex 1s boys limping off the pitch.

However, within the first 10 minutes Marys had crossed the Guys tryline and it became apparent these were not genuine 3s players. Did this stop the mighty 3s? No. It merely spurred them on with solid defence seen from Hari Ravi and Poom Kunplin on the wing and at fullback.

As the game progressed Marys were forced to work harder as the 3s threw their bodies on the line with Younger Simon and Hayden giving all they had in ruck and mall before they went off for a breather, seeing Will Hanan and Diedre come into the fray. Rich Cameron and Will became a couple of big ginger furies as they continued to smash the endless Marys fringe runners to the ground. Matt Camilleri and Diedre ran around the pitch like men possessed hitting the Marys 10 and any other unfortunate who touched the ball. Diedre once again putting in an unbelievable display of lack of self respect and fitness flying at ankles and knees, one of which got the better of him producing a spectacular nose bleed.

Jack showed his true captaining skills on the pitch, not only commanding the boys in defence and attack but flooring a cheating piece of Marys scum who struck out at Diedre informing him in the politest of ways not to do it again.

Tom fenner showed great heart after twinging his back in the 2s came off to be replaced by Tom Tom who gave us a little more weight in the forward runner and ruck department.

Half time came and the score was several to none. The boys heads were still up, passion was high and Zack who had spent most of his time on the pitch stealing ball and at the bottom of every ruck just wanted to get back out and do it all over again.

The second half saw Tony come off after giving everything in the pack and our scrum go uncontested. As well as a spate of Marys penalties Jack finally had some decent ball to distribute to Nathan, who up until this point had been mostly involved in defence and placing forward runners into the small gaps in the Marys defence. But now he could command a few of the hastily prepared backs moves which proved nearly devastating with Charlie falling a few meters short of the try line, moreover Izzy, Nick Chang and sam Nayar all made ground off their runs. Replacements were also made seeing Tom Garth and James Holland appear at wing and fullback, both took up the task and put their bodies on the line securing loose ball and providing a great last stand.

After a brief rest Charlie Reeve returned into the attack and Hayden was seen coming back onto the field along with a few other starters for the final 15mins which saw the mighty 3s rebuff countless attacks and launch several of their own spending most of the time turning over the ball and marching it back into the Marys 22. Unfortnately none of these outstanding displays resulted in points but the passion was always there.

Final Score: 63-0

To quote Mr John Maynard ‘Your boys have shown terrific amount of heart today. They have reaffirmed my faith in Guys Rugby and what your club is capable of.’

All that is left to be said is, thank you boys for a great season.

IMPORTANT Proposed Club Changes at Upcoming AGM

Our current 1st XV situation playing 45+ games a year is unsustainable and unenjoyable for student players and there is a large rift between the talent and commitment levels seen in Wednesday BUCS fixtures and the Saturday RFU leagues, however as the oldest rugby club in the world we are founder members of the RFU and have a long tradition of graduates playing for us (despite the lack of them this year!). We have thought carefully about our options and what we are proposing is below. Ferg and I will be arguing for it at the AGM, we are hoping that it is the best compromise to satisfy everyone involved at GHRFC. Comments are welcomed.

For next season:

1) The Saturday 1st XV would play in NAMS, the Kent Cup and a few exhibition matches (already managed to get some interest from Cambridge)...when they don't have matches they would train seriously in a local park on the weekends in sunlight (which would solve our training facility issues). This would mirror the set up of Cardiff Medicals who have in recent years been the best medical team in the country, I think it would satisfy the 1st XV players and would result in an elite, highly competitive, well-drilled squad to give ourselves the best chance of winning the Hospitals Cup and maintaining the BUSA league position vs Bart's and Imperial Medicals we worked hard for this year. For all of these Saturday competitions we would be entered as Guy's Hospital RFC. This would amount to around 12 weekend fixtures each season.

2) The 2nd XV would then compete in Kent 2, supplemented with 1st XV graduates that still want to regularly represent the Saturday club that are not satisfied with just 12 games and for students that are on the brink of breaking into the 1st XV squad. I would also propose that we have a large recruitment drive in the local community and around graduates in London to add further players. Talking to Scott (current 2nd XV captain) there are currently around 20 games each year for the 2nd XV and only 18 in Kent 2. He played for me once or twice last season and reckons that currently although they may get beaten regularly they ought to be able to fulfil the fixture list and be competitive in many games especially if he has more players. I think the team would take on a more casual feel than it does now and perhaps this would appeal more to doctors in the area who are just keen to play not such serious games. So this would give us the option to make the RFU league our 1st XV in the future if things change in terms of our available player base, would satisfy graduates leaving that still want to play for the club, would stop the best players in the club being expected to play 45+ games and would maintain the international ticket allocation.

3) The 3rd XV would attempt to fulfil the 2nd XV fixtures in the Kent Metropolitan leagues, this season there was some initial interest but without regular fixtures it soon faded away. It is likely that they would get demoted quite soon on, but perhaps that would be a good thing so they can find a level more suitable for them (it may even be worth asking to be demoted).

4) The club captain would have to be the 1st XV captain of BUCS, NAMS, Kent Cup, UH and the exhibition games. He would be more closely supported by the coach, team manager and vice-captain so that he can concentrate on being a figurehead for the club both on and off the pitch instead of getting bogged down in admin as the club captains have in the past few seasons.

...there is still time for input and tweaking, if anyone has any better ideas or feels strongly that this is the incorrect course of action please comment on the message board (as the AGM is likely to be long enough as it is).

Macadam Cup report

I got asked to write for the medical student newspaper, unfortunately not as good as the one from the RUMS game...but this is what I submitted:

With Guy's Hospital RFC riding high from clinching the league from fellow med-student side RUMS and seeing the season record of King's College London we went into the match with much gusto and confidence. GKT as a whole lost Macadam for the first time last year due to sorry performances from our previously indefatigable swimming and darts teams. For the first time the day actually felt like a competition.

On awakening it was clear the weather would make for sweaty conditions, an extra portion of milk to make up for this was applied to porridges. For Berrylands the meet as usual was under the clock tower at Waterloo for spinach, brie, bacon and cranberry Upper-Crust sandwiches along with some pre-game banter, which as always is of a dreadful standard. It really is remarkable that anyone would enjoy our company. This was smartly followed by an awkward stroll past the KCL team as we embarked on the same train to Berrylands.

The mood of the day was set when on arrival Saffa coach Richard Aitken insisted that we relax in the shade, while our rivals were soon out playing touch without the proper sun protection. We enjoyed our usual short sharp warm up and were soon ready to play, opting to have the sun at our backs in the first half in the hope that the Earth would rotate enough for it to disappear when we began playing towards the pavilion.

The match was quite an abrasive affair with big hits and cheap shots going in from both sides, which culminated in club captain Fergle Devonport being taken out in the air to cause a huge bruise on his ass that he is happy to show off if you ask him (mobile number 07795143999). The first half was extremely one sided, the first try comming from skipper on the day Charles West after a well executed short lineout and subsequent peel off the back of a maul. With the weather as it was it did not take long for backs Holloway, Aiken, Malthouse (not so much Witek) and Dye to get in on the action and by the time half-time treats and refreshments were over the win was in the bag. The second half was a case of closing out the match as KCL came back strongly playing a much more structured game. We managed to do this with ease.

A small water fight followed, and after showering and donning smarts we were ready to enjoy the rest of the day. As we came back out it was encouraging to hear the GKT ladies netballers had dispatched their oppo and the men's football were in the ascendency...like us, eventually closing out a win (for both of these teams the first time they have managed the feat in a number of years!). The GKT ladies footballers of course dominated their Strand counterparts with the excellent form they have been showing all season. Hockey (held at a different ground) was a mixed bag, the ladies winning (again) and the men losing out despite a brave performance against a KCL team several leagues higher. The most exciting match of the day was the ladies rugby, both teams showed huge commitment. GKT managed to clinch it at the death and hold on for a famous win that was definitely the best of the day. The excitement was too much for young Simon Lau who managed to dislocate his elbow during an impromptu wrestling match on the sidelines against his even younger counterpart.

So Macadam was ours again, the memories now of course fade into the mist of time. Generally speaking there was much drinking of the booze by all concerned. At King's/GKT we made an excellent argument for keeping campus teams seperate...and again if BUCS really enforce this merger they can "go f-u-c-k themselves."

I have spoken to Charlie west about a potential friendly villagers vs. cavaliers in early may, but he says that some people have exams and electives. However, if someone believes they can arrange a 11 to play please let me know.

Of course ability is not an issue, just a fun day of 30 overs in chiselhurst with BBQ and drinks.
